Quantum
The ship’s waiting - it’s ten past eight
and the feral cats of Hadrian’s Library
will be stirring now, making tracks
for tavernas where waiters are sweeping and spreading
fresh white tablecloths and cutlery
and we could eat kalamari
under orange trees and roll
all night in sex we kiss something cracks
inside me I break
away and
start to sprint
down the pier faster and
faster my black
Chanel bag hooked on my
elbow thudding my hip as my
sandals flap to catch up with my
feet and there is the
ship not far away now the lights
of the port holes I thrust
my body my lungs
are burning my feet are
wings and the gang
plank is up but round the gap of the hatch there are
faces I know I can do it I can leap
and off
I
jump
deep
into Piraeus harbour
still clutching my bag as I
sink without knowing
I will
survive
the water
eerily oily
green
